Pre-Planning Checklist

Although there’s a lot that goes into planning a funeral, making those arrangements beforehand gives you time to consider all of your options and ensures that you’re covering all of the necessary details. The following checklist will help you to begin creating your personalized plan.

Information than you may want to assemble:

 Vital Statistics

  • Paper work/documentation that will be helpful for your pre-planning arrangement
    • SSN documents
    • Marriage license
    • Birth certificate
    • Military discharge document (DD214)
    • Life insurance policies
    • Living Will/Will

Ways in which you can plan ahead…

Biographical Information

  • Gather personal and family information if you would like to write your own obituary
  • If desired, choose a charity that you would like donations to go to in your name
  • Choose a funeral home
  • Make note of any special instructions that you desire for your services and final disposition

Funeral Information

  • Choose whether you would like to be buried or cremated
  • Select a casket or urn
  • Choose the location and type of service
  • Decide whether you would like to have a viewing and/or visitation
  • Consider any customs, traditions, or religious rites that are important to you and your family
  • Choose the clothing that you would like to be dressed in
  • Select music and hymns
  • Select a style for your stationery and memorial register book 

Religious Service

  • Choose a clergy member, officiant that you would like to officiate your service
  • Select any musicians you would like at your service
  • Select pallbearers
  • Choose friends or family members to perform the eulogy, read scripture, or prepare a speech

 Cemetery

  • Choose a cemetery
  • Select a burial or cremation plot or a mausoleum as may be appropriate
  • Select a headstone or grave marker and inscription
