A celebration of Bill's life and a funeral luncheon is planned for all of his family and friends to attend on Monday November 8, 2010 at 1:00 PM at the VFW Hall in AuGres, Michigan. Please call the funeral home at 989-362-8191 to help the family with a reservation count.

Obituary Notice

William "Bill" Walter Bienlien, of Whitney Township, formerly of Ann Arbor, died on Saturday October 23, 2010 at the Standish St. Mary’s Medical Center in Standish, Michigan, age 78. Bill was born in Holstein, Iowa on June 5, 1932 to Walter and Margaret Evelyn (nee Cooley) Bienlien. Bill enlisted in the United States Army, and proudly served our country during the Korean Conflict as a Corporal in the 4th Infantry Division while being stationed in Germany. Bill attended the Iowa State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree, then he attended the University of Iowa, where he earned his Master’s Degree. Upon college graduation, he began his long teaching career at the Davenport High School and Palmer Jr. College in Davenport, Iowa. He spent his last 26 years of teaching in Ann Arbor at Scarlett Jr. High, Huron High School, and Ann Arbor Pioneer High School, retiring in 1995. Bill will be remembered for his passion for teaching, biking, Color Tours, spending time in Key West, basketball, mornings at Kelly’s, and loved being with his family and friends. He was a member of the American Legion, Tawas Eagles #2855, Tawas Moose #2400, and the Cooley Family Association. Bill married his wife, Lois Ann (nee Babler) on July 10, 1961, and she survives him. Together they spent 39 wonderful years of marriage together. Bill is also survived by his 4 children, Jacqueline Bienlien of West Liberty, Iowa, Mark Bienlien of California, Kent (Sarah) Bienlien of Anes, Iowa, and Janeen (Corey) Wakeland of Davenport, Iowa; 5 step-children, Yvonne Shufelt of Michigan, Tish Drumb of California, Camber Tegart of Michigan, George William Shufelt III of California, and Craig Shufelt of Michigan; 9 grandchildren, Jared, Hannah, Lydia, Prisca, Spencer, Alexa, Elizabeth (Daniel) Moe, Amanda Holman, Isabella Shufelt; 2 great grandchildren, Danielle and Drake; 2 brothers, James (Patricia) Bienlien of Illinois, and Daniel (Patricia) Bienlien of Springfield, Virginia; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and very special friends. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, and 2 brothers. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and his family will be hosting a celebration of his life with a fellowship luncheon for all of his friends and family to attend. There will be a celebration of Bill’s life and a funeral luncheon for all his family and friends to attend on Monday November 8, 2010 at 1:00 PM at the AuGres VFW Hall at 3651 East Huron Road; AuGres, MI. 48703. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the American Heart Association or the Arenac Historical Society Museum.
