Obituary Notice

Robert W. Elliott, Jr., of East Tawas, Michigan, age 81 years, died on Monday afternoon, December 12, 2011 at his home with his family by his side. Bob was born January 8, 1930 to the late Robert and Kathryn Elliott in East Tawas. He graduated from East Tawas High School, attained the rank of Eagle Scout, and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Notre Dame University in 1951. He was a loyal alumnus and attended his 60th Anniversary in June 2011. He was a member of the armed forces during the Korean War. It was at a USO dance in Indiana that he met his future wife, Aileen Marie Lipps. They were married on November 28, 1953 in New Albany, Indiana. They returned to East Tawas where he joined his father and brother in the Tawas Bay Insurance Agency. In the 1980's, three of his sons joined him in the agency. He retired from 42 years as an independent insurance agent in 1995. Bob was instrumental in forming the Tawas Knothole Little League and helped coach teams for twenty years. When his children were in school he was an avid supporter of Tawas Area team sports and the band. He served many organizations and clubs, such as the Tawas St. Joseph's Hospital, local and county school boards, and the Lions Club, often serving in leadership roles. He served as president of the Michigan Association of Insurance Agents and was inducted into the Insurance Hall of Fame in 2000. He had a tremendous passion for the City of East Tawas for which he promoted everywhere he went and was its mayor for ten years. He was still an active participant in the Medical Care Facility Board, Iosco Transit Corporation, Iosco County Historical Museum and TIFA Board of the City of East Tawas. He loved telling others about the beauty of Tawas Bay, hunting, enjoying many hours at the Buckhorn Hunting Camp, walking, dancing, traveling and most of all his family. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a hearty laugh. His optimism and enthusiasm for life was a gift to all who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Aileen, four sons and a daughter, Robert (Bert) East Grand Rapids; Kevin (Tina) West Branch; Mark (Susan) East Tawas; Julie Rybar (Ron) Fenton, and Charlie (Julie) West Branch; fourteen grandchildren: Jennifer (Ryan), Robert, Maureen, Tony, Peter, Danny, Matthew, Megan, Nick, Ben, Macauley, Hannah, Katie, and Sam, sister-in-law Rita Woodruff, Tipton, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Kharla Weaver and brother-in-law Curt and brother John (Jack) Elliott and sister-in-law Louise. A funeral mass is scheduled for Friday December 16, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Holy Family Catholic Church in East Tawas with Father Charles Donajkowski and Father Lawrence Boks officiating. His family will welcome friends at the Buresh Funeral Home in Tawas City on Thursday from 1:00 - 4:00 PM and 6:00 - 8:00 PM for visitation. Micheal T Tate sr, ,

This was a shock to me, as this is 2016. The great second father I had. My godfather Bob, and godmother Aileen were always there for Ricky and I growing up during fantastic Tawas summers. I now can remember learning waterskiing, fishing, boating safety! But, little league with Rob and coach Bob. The best child hood ever! So sorry for lateness. There is no doubt Heaven is more alive than ever! Love and so missing all my family. Aloha to everyone.

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Elliott. He was a dear, kind man with a great sense of humor and a very large heart. I always enjoyed hearing him express his feelings and views of things. He was an old fashioned gentleman, displaying the qualities of a time gone by. My last conversation with him was at a company Christmas party a while back and we were sharing stories about his sons Kevin and Charlie. I told him how thankful I was to work with them, I am glad I shared that with him and I could tell he was very proud of them. My condolences to all of the Elliott family at this most difficult time. May God bring you comfort and peace.

We will miss his great positive spirit. His "it doesn't get any better than this " and "Amen, brother". This fundamental affirmation of the value of others given by one who lived a truly valuable life. We will miss the sound of his voice. One thing that always brought a smile was him honking the horn as a greeting ...we will miss that

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Elliott family. I knew Both both as a fellow insurance agent active in MAIA and later as a staff member (now retired) of MAIA. He was always fun to work with and he always got the job done! The insurance industry in Michigan has lost a good champion!

Aileen and the Elliott Family, Some of my best memories from childhood centered around the Elliott family, especially Bob and Aileen. Still, today, I cannot hear the Notre Dame fight song without thinking of Bob. He'd sing it so loud we could hear it at our house, down the road. He was a great guy who left the world a better place. May God continue to bless your family and may the wonderful cheerful memories of Bob be a source of comfort you your family during this difficult time of loss. Love, Paul and Carol LaPorte
