Obituary Notice

Robert Eugene Gillings, age 88, of Oscoda, formerly of Prescott, passed away on Monday, October 22, 2018. He was born on October 3, 1930 in Pontiac, MI to Harlow & Esther (Hall) Gillings. He graduated from Sterling High School in 1949. He also obtained an Associate’s Degree from Delta College in 1973. Bob worked on the family farm in Prescott until he entered the US Army on October 24, 1951 and served until September 30, 1953 serving in Germany where he reached the rank of CPL. He married Constance M. Bronson on January 16, 1955 in Prescott at the family home. He worked as a rural mail carrier for many years until his retirement in 1991. Bob loved to play baseball and he played for the Prescott team in the NEMC League. He was inducted into the NEMC Baseball Hall of Fame in 2011. Bob was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a great canoe racer. He was most proud of the Big Texas Water Safari 500 mile race that he and Al Widing won in 1964. He was a member of the Michigan Canoe Racers Association and the American National Canoe Association. He taught his niece Kari to paddle and together they entered many races. Bob even raced in the Senior Racers category and every race he entered he won until he quit racing. Bob was a member of both the VFW and the American Legion.

Bob is survived by his wife Connie of Oscoda; son, Michael (Theresa) Gillings of Kalkaska; grandson, Josh (Shonda) Kelly of Mountain Home, ID; great granddaughters, Brianna & Rachel; sisters-in-law, Victoria (Grant) Duley of Sandusky, MI, Jeanette Bronson of Cheboygan, MI; brothers-in-law, Dr. William Williams of Englewood, FL; Judd Wainwright of Oscoda, MI; cousins, Jerry (Velda) Hall of Prescott, MI, John Hall of Cookeville, TN, Howard (Sandra) Weaver of Greenbank, WA; and many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Harlow in 1952; mother, Esther in 1974; brothers, Harlow in 2015, William in 2007, and Richard in 2018.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 26, 2018 at 1:00 pm at the Prescott Chapel of the Buresh Funeral Home. A visitation with the family will take place from 11:00 am until the time of the service. Online condolences may be made to the family at

My sincere condolences. I have many good memories of Bob when he was our post man. One time when he got stung by a bee and was having a reaction and he came to our store for help.
