He was my trailblazer. Being 18 months older than I, he did everything first. I remember my first day of school. He and my sister guided me to school and quizzed me along the way about my name, address and telephone number.
I was in second grade when there was a violent summer storm with torrential rain and lightening; all students were let out of school. I was overwhelmed and was wandering aimlessly about crying when Paul came walking up through all the puddles. No raincoat, no boots-just a rugged determination to get home. He guided me home by telling me to be quiet and just follow him.
He showed that rugged determination all his life. He may not have chosen to do what was expected every time, but he charted his own course and stuck to it no matter what. I will miss him the rest of my life. Ralph Silvey
