Michael D. O’Farrell, age 71, of Whittemore, MI, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Select Specialty Hospital in Pontiac. Mike was born on January 1, 1947 in West Branch, MI to Elgin & Leah (McCarthy) O’Farrell. He was the first child born in Ogemaw County that year. Mike taught in both Hale and Whittemore-Prescott Area Schools for 30 years and thoroughly enjoyed sharing his love of science with others. Mike enjoyed gardening, canning, hunting, music, traveling, reading, history, puttering around the house and yard, and celebrating his Irish heritage. He was extremely proud of his two children and loved being “Papa Mike” to his grandchildren.
Mike is survived by his wife of 36 years, Joni of Whittemore; son, Colin (Michelle) O’Farrell of Farmington Hills; and daughter, Madie O’Farrell of Columbus, OH; beloved grandchildren, Kelly and Sean O’Farrell; brother, John (Sona) O’Farrell of Whittemore; mother-in-law, 93 year old Millie Hampson; and his constant companions, dogs Lilly and Connor; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elgin & Leah O’Farrell; brother, Gordon, and too many dogs to count.
Mike’s favorite saying was a passage from the song “Danny Boy”, “And I will know, tho’ soft ye tread above me, And then my grave will richer, sweeter be, And you’ll bend down and tell me that you love me, And I will rest in peace until you come to me.” A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 1:00 pm at the Buresh Funeral Home in Hale. Visitation will take place from 11 am to 1 pm at the funeral home. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.bureshfuneralhomes.com.

Sorry to hear about Mike's passing. Mike was our cousin and helped me a great deal as I began my science teaching career. I actually subbed for Mike when he taught at Hale schools, which was also helpful. I know his family and home town of Whittemore meant a lot to him, as it does for all of the O'Farrell family.

Our sincere condolences to Joni, Colin and Madie, Michelle, Kelly and Sean. Mike and I grew up together, many of those years next door to each other. Mike and were both born in 1947, Mike in January and I in February. After high school we went on different paths, but when together, we enjoyed catching up on our families and he would just beam when talking about his. Our hometown and Irish heritage were both important to us. I will miss you Mike, but look forward to seeing you again. Rest in peace and with no pain now. Love Gary, Barb and Kris Gillings

Joni, saddened and so sorry to hear of Mikes passing! my memories take me back, when we would sit on the front porch and drink our beers out of mason jars! ( Mikes glass collection!) That, and painting the old green "50" Ford pick-up! Although I have not seen either of you in more than three years, his smiling face will always be in my memory!
Hope to get over and see you and the family Saturday! Mark and Sue Wainwright

My sincere condolences to Mr. O’Farrells family. He was one of my favorite and best science teachers ever. He truly cared about his students. I can still see him sitting behind the desk in the biology lab, peering over the top of his glasses making sure we were all paying attention. He definitely was someone I looked up to. A wonderful person, so very sad to hear of his passing.

My prayers go out to Joni and the entire family. What a blessing Mike was to everyone. He was an extremely kind and pleasant man to be around and wish I would of been one of his students. How shocked and immediately saddened when I turned the page of the paper and saw Mike's face. His character and kind ways will be remembered fondly. I am very glad I knew Mike O'Farrell, even if only for short periods each year.
