Obituary Notice

Melvin Ray McCormick

Age 93 of Tawas City, Michigan passed away peacefully under the loving care of his family and hospice on Wednesday, December 13, 2017.  Melvin was born the son of Martin and Margaret (Joppich) McCormick in Tawas City, Michigan on September 19, 1924 and was lovingly raised by his special Uncle Henry and Aunt Leota McCormick.  Melvin proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. He worked in the gypsum industry for many years, first being employed with U.S. Gypsum Company for a while, and then National Gypsum Company and having had the opportunity to serve as president of the union, Oil Chemical Atomic Workers Local #7-239. After working well over 30 years, he retired in 1988.  Melvin was a classic and vintage car enthusiast.  He was extremely knowledgeable about vehicles and was passionate about collecting and repairing Model A’s and other vintage automobiles. Melvin enjoyed attending flea markets, garage sales, and any place with a deal!  His interests also continued into collecting and working with farm equipment, classic farm tractors, and antique gasoline pumps. Melvin often would pick up a good western book and read or relax in his chair watching a classic western movie.  He married his best friend Irene (Schultz) on June 28, 1945 in East Tawas, Michigan and together they shared 71 years and 11 months in their first home they built.   Melvin is survived by his daughter, Nikkie McCormick; his beloved dog, Star, 1 brother, Martin (Marty) McCormick; 2 grandchildren, Stephanie Malone and Keith (Christina) Lutes; six great-grandchildren, Michael Malone – who was raised by Melvin and Irene since he was 4 years of age and in heart, was fondly known as their son, Andrew, Misti, Teara, Charlotte and Karlie; 1 great great grandson, Dominic. Melvin is preceded in death by his wife, Irene McCormick, a daughter Marti, parents, Martin and Margaret McCormick, step father, Edward J. Myers, aunt and uncle Leota and Henry McCormick, twin brother, Alvin J. McCormick,.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 12 o’clock Noon at the Buresh Funeral Home in Tawas City with Pastor Justin Seay officiating and military honors being rendered.  Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Tawas City.  The family will welcome friends from 10:00 AM until the time of service.  Memorial contributions in Melvin’s name may be made to Heartland Hospice or the Iosco County Animal Shelter.  Condolences may be shared at
