Melvin " Mel " Weinkauff

Age 83, of East Tawas, MI and formerly of Warren, MI died on Sunday, February 5, 2012 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, MI. He was born in Detroit, MI on July 7, 1928 to the late Fred and Edna Weinkauff (nee Lambert). Mel graduated from Detroit Pershing High School and later served in the United States Air Force. He later worked for several years at Ford Motor Company before retiring in 1987. Mel enjoyed golfing, bowling, hunting and being outdoors. He also enjoyed watching the Detroit Red Wings and other sports on television. Mel was a member of the Mason Lodge and the American Legion. He is survived by his brother Walter Zirbel of AZ, sister Lenore Weinkauff of East Tawas, MI, two nephews, Tom Zirbel of AZ, Curtis Zirbel of WA, niece Julie Zirbel of AZ and cousins Wally Lambert and Donna VanDeKerkhove. In addition to his parents, Mel was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Urbany and Eleanor Weinkauff. A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 13, 2012 - 10 am at Buresh Funeral Home in Tawas City, MI. Intement will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery in East Tawas, MI. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Iosco County Humane Society and you may offer condolences at www.bureshfuneralhomes.com

I am so sorry for your loss. I played golf with Mel on Mondays and Fridays plu in The Elks golf league on Wed. He was a great person that I had the privledge to know and respect. He will be missed by all the Monday - Friday golfers at Tawas Creek.

Met Mel while we both worked at Ford Transmision plant in Livonia. We had work contacts as well as social (bowling league, golf trips). Mel always impressed me with his consistant upbeat, friendly attitude. A very nice, likeable man! We will all miss him. May he rest in peace!
