Obituary Notice

Mary Margaret (nee Bergevin) Gowenlock peacefully passed away  in East Tawas, surrounded by friends and family on Dec. 5, 2017.

She was born on Feb. 25, 1927 in Bay City and was the youngest of five children, with three brothers, Tom, George and Bill, and her sister, Claire.

At the age of 3, her father, then vice president of the Detroit and Mackinac Railway, moved the family to East Tawas, where she went to St. Joseph’s Catholic School before attending Mary Grove College in Detroit.

Mary Margaret married her one true love, James Gowenlock, on Oct. 21, 1950 and they resided in Oscoda, where they owned Jim’s Supermarket for 43 years.

She was a devoted attendee of the Sacred Heart Church in Oscoda for which her uncle was the architect.

Mary Margaret, affectionately known as “Mimi,” was a 40-year sponsor of the Sisters of Maryknoll and loved making jewelry, painting, wine and doting on a fat ginger cat named Steptoe.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church in Oscoda.

Sending prayers and hugs to all of you. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to visit with Aunt Mary Margaret this summer. We had a chance to reminisce about all the years when our families would get together at the hunting camp or even earlier at Gramma Gowenlocks home. Know that she is now up in heaven with Uncle Jim, the Martins and my parents. Can you imagine the party they are having?
May the angels welcome her to paradise. May the martyrs greet her at the door. May she see the face of GOD this day.
MaryAnn

I am happy that I got to visit with Mary Margaret for a little bit when I took communion to her at Tendercare. I am sure there is a lot of reminiscing going on in heaven with my godfather (Jim) and my Dad (Gordon Hackborn). We loved the stories Dad would tell about working at Jim's. Your Mom, grandma was such a wonderful person.
— Linda Hicks
Our prayers and hugs to the entire Gowenlock family. Mimi was such a wonderful friend and neighbor, who we'll miss dearly.
