Lawrence (Larry) F Schafer, 91, of Oscoda, Michigan passed away peacefully April 28, 2018 at home under the loving care of his daughter.
Larry was born June 15, 1926 in Allen Park Michigan, the youngest of 5 children, to the late George G and Elsie (Gladding) Schafer. He worked as a dairy farmer on his family’s farm, the last working farm in Allen Park, through the 1960s. The award winning Schafer Dairy Farm garnered many Grand Champion Holstein cattle through the years. Lawrence graduated from Melvindale High School in 1944. After recovering from severe injuries sustained by a bull attack, he was inducted into the United States Army as an infantryman and served in central Europe with the 63rd Infantry Division during World War II. Upon returning stateside, he met and eventually married Betty Bossick in 1952. Together they raised two children, Jean and John. Following the liquidation of the Schafer Farm, Larry took a job as a construction supervisor for Tri-Value Homes and later for one of its principals, Garrish Building. Lawrence remarried in 1985 to Wilma Joseph and moved to Ohio where he worked for and retired from General Dynamics building the infamous M1A1/2 military battle tanks.
Lawrence is survived by his two children, Jean Morin of Oscoda, Michigan and Dr. John (Vickie) Schafer of Waterford, Michigan; three grandchildren, Kenneth Robbins, Renee (Dennis) Marcos, and Craig (Alice) Schafer; five great-grandchildren, Skylar, Braeden, Samantha, Rebecca and Caleb; one brother, Willard Schafer of Lapeer, Michigan; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Lawrence was preceded in death by his siblings Harold, Clarence and Gladys; and son-in-law, Leonard Morin.
