Obituary Notice

Jonathan "Jon" Charles Fairbanks, of East Tawas, passed away at his home on Sunday, January 5, 2020, age 66 years. Jon was born to Edward and Willmetta (Goheen) Fairbanks on August 15, 1953 in Flint. He graduated from LaSalle High School in St. Ignace with the class of 1971. After high school graduation, Jon went to work for US Gypsum and was employed there until 1975. Soon after leaving the gypsum industry, Jon decided to further his education and he studied Civil Engineering at the School of the Ozarks in Branson, Missouri. He transferred his studies to Wayne State University where he eventually earned a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1982. Upon graduating from Wayne State, Jon went to work at the United States Patent and Trademark Office in Washington, DC. Jon retired from the United States Patent industry in 1989 and soon after, moved back home to Michigan. He married his wife and best friend, Karen (Belcher) on February 6, 1993 at the East Tawas Assembly of God Church in East Tawas in a ceremony officiated by his father, Reverend Edward Fairbanks. Jon truly enjoyed collecting stamps, coins and muscle cars. He also enjoyed reading about tales of shipwrecks, and playing board games. However, he absolutely adored and cherished the time spent with his grandchildren. Jonathan is survived by his loving wife, Karen Fairbanks; stepson, Jason Flowers; 3 brothers, Paul (Marianne) Fairbanks of Tawas City, Dennis (Karen) Fairbanks of Harrison, and James (Nipa) Fairbanks of National City; 2 grandchildren, Sean and Aaliyah; mother in law, Barbara Belcher; several nieces and nephews. Jon is preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Phillip Fairbanks. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and his family will celebrate his life through a private memorial service.
