Jerome "Jerry" L. Wester, age 82, of Skidway Lake, Michigan passed away Sunday, July 29, 2018 at the Villa of West Branch. Jerry was born on January 25, 1936 in Munising, Michigan to the late Leonard and Elvi (Lassila) Wester. He proudly served our country during the Korean War. Jerry graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Northern Michigan University, and worked as an accountant for 22 years with United Technologies. He was a very community oriented man who did so much for his town. He served on the Ogemaw County Veteran's Active Commission and Planning Commission; a lifetime member of the Elks, VFW, and the American Legion #370; a member of the Moose Lodge #440; and a Past Commander of both the VFW in Southfield and West Branch. Jerry received the recognition as Veteran of the Year in Ogemaw County as well! He was also actively involved in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Jerry loved to travel, and was an avid book reader, and a devoted family man. He had a constant curiosity for knowledge and loved to share it with people. He was instrumental in the building of the Veteran's Memorial in West Branch and the construction of the Veteran Museum and American Legion Post #370. He was a prolific photographer and collector of memorabilia, including his Finnish heritage. He was the true epitome of SISU.
Jerry is survived by his siblings, Jack Wester, and Karen (Vern) Perry; his brother in law, Leonard Rukkila; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Beverly, and Marcy.
Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held with military honors on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the American Legion Hall #370. He will be laid to rest in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatum, Michigan at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ogemaw County Cancer Relay for Life or the Ogemaw County Veteran's Museum in his name.
