Gary Eugene Franklin, of East Tawas, formerly of Dayton, Ohio, passed away very peacefully at his home with his loving family by his side, age 62 years. Gary was born on June 19, 1955 in Elizabeth, New Jersey to William and Erma (Hess) Franklin. He worked as a manager for 10 years with KFC in East Tawas, and later worked as a supervisor with Hungry Howie’s in East Tawas for 13 years. Then after many years in the food industry earning invaluable experience, Gary and his wife, Nan, had their opportunity to begin their own restaurant, Richie’s New York Deli in East Tawas. Gary and Nan owned and operated the deli for 14 years before they decided it was time to step away from the business and retire. Gary was a drummer since age 10. He was in several bands; Lost Cause, Daniel Lots, and two Christian bands. His life centered around Christ, his wife, kids, grandkids, and food (he always traveled with a fork, according to his wife and kids). Gary absolutely loved and adored children. He had a great sense of humor that could brighten anyone’s day. Gary fought a long, hard battle of heart failure for the last four years. He will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him. Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Nannette “Nan” Franklin, to whom he married on September 15, 1990; his loving children, Shane Franklin of Grand Rapids, Angela (Matt) Franklin-Krell of Kentucky, Jacob Franklin (Karina Adamiak) of East Tawas, Sara (Tyler) Rood of East Tawas; grandchildren, Kristopher Franklin, Luna Krell, Liam Krell, Kyle Franklin, Amiya Franklin, Samuel Rood, and Brooke Johnston; mother in law, Myra Giannini; 5 brothers, Ronald (Velma) Franklin of Virginia, Tommy (Jackie) Franklin of Kentucky, Billie (Debbie) Franklin of Ohio, Mark (Jennie) Franklin of Ohio, and David Franklin of Ohio; 1 sister, Sharon (Gary) Johns of Ohio; 1 brother in law, Dennis Giannini Jr.; many nieces, nephews, and special friends. Gary is preceded in death by his parents, William and Erma Franklin; and 1 brother, Paul Franklin. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held with a memorial service on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 1:00 PM at the Church of the Nazarene at 811 East Bay Street, East Tawas with Reverend Jerry Wallace officiating. His family will welcome friends at the church on Saturday from 12:00 PM until the time of the service. An online guest registry is available at www.bureshfuneralhomes.com.
