Obituary Notice

On May 5, 2020, Donald F. Hughes, of Omer, formerly of Bay City, Michigan, returned home to be with his wife.

Don was born on March 21st, 1938 in Bay City, to Frank and Evelyn (Claes) Hughes. In 1957, he graduated from Bay City Central High School. He served honorably in the US Marine Corp from 1958 until 1961. He was married to Sandra K. Hughes (Steinhoff), also from Bay City on December 14, 1968. Their life together created two sons, Jeffery Allen Hughes of Essexville, Michigan and Robert Frank Hughes, of Fairgrove, Michigan. They resided in Omer, MI, from 1977 until 2016. He was preceded in death just 62 days prior by his wife. He was also preceded by both parents and his sister; Jeanne Hughes.

Don was an avid outdoorsman and skilled “tinkerer”. He couldn't tell enough tales of him and his dad, uncles, cousins or friends, and their hunting and fishing adventures and shenanigans. He could never sit still, and was always searching for and usually developing “a better way.” It always gave him joy being involved with his sons, or playing the role of favorite uncle and grandpa, regardless of what the parents thought. It was nearly impossible to catch him without a smile on his face or without a daily mission.

He is survived by his two sons, Jeffery Hughes and Robert (Martha) Hughes. Also, left to cherish his memory are his sister Marilyn (Ken) Hebert of Decatur, AL, sister Carole (Tom) Balley of Sun City West, AZ, and brother Jerry Hughes of San Diego, CA, and as well as many nieces, nephews and three granddaughters.

According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service and celebration of his and Sandy's lives will be held at Noon on August 8th, 2020, at the Omer Little League Field, on State Road in Omer, Michigan.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude's Research Hospital, PO Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN, 38148-0142, or call 800-822-6344 or visit – Reference Memorial ID# 11956315.

Online condolences and tributes may be shared below.

We loved Uncle Donny. Nick was so glad he got to meet him over Thanksgiving. He made the best smoked fish and was always in a good mood, making us laugh at one thing or another (even if it wasn't always appropriate). Ha. My family continues to pray for yours. Give Emma and Mallory a hug, as I'm sure they will miss their grandfather deeply.

To my dear Donny, I will miss you dearly, you were like a son more then a nephew to me. I have many memories of us together. I remember when you born your mom was giving you a bath on the kitchen table. We lived around the corner from each other and were always together. I started baby setting you when I was 8 yrs. old, and you were a hand full. I member when you were about 8 or 10 and took your dad's car and drove it down the ally and boy did you get in trouble. You always would snitch your dad's snacks for his lunch box, You would climb that tall cupboard. You will always be in my heart and mind. I Love You very much and You will be greatly missed. I Loved your visits and couldn't wait til the next time you would come. Till we meet again , Your Aunt Mart. "Darts". 😘😘😘💕💕💕💋💋💋🙏🙏🙏🙏 I Love you!!!
