Bernie was born the son of Frank and Mary (Blust) Nelkie on October 24, 1919 in Tawas Township, Michigan. Bernie proudly served our country in the United States Navy from 1942 – 1945. He worked for the Tawas Area Schools as a custodian for 22 years before his retirement in 1982. Bernie was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church where he served as an usher, and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He loved to vacation in Cedarville, Michigan and have his family fill all the cabins that surrounded him. He loved fishing, gardening and woodworking which he was famous for making each family a woodpecker. Bernie was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was always there for his family and loved spending quality time with each of them. He loved being a great grandfather to his 15 great grandchildren, he loved playing with them and chewing on their ears! He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him. Bernie met his wife Gladys while she was working for the old Holland Hotel in East Tawas one night on the dance floor. Bernie said he got a dance and a date all in one night! That evening the two began their loving and long lasting relationship, and they soon married at the old St. Joseph Catholic Church in East Tawas on May 10, 1947. Together, Bernie and Gladys, have raised 5 children and celebrated 64 beautiful years of marriage! Bernie is survived by his children; Gayle Staweke of East Tawas, Doyle (Karen) Nelkie of East Tawas, Lynn (James) Westcott of East Tawas, Jane Bailey of Niceville, Florida, and Alan (Val) Nelkie of East Tawas, Michigan; 9 grandchildren, Kevin Staweke, Jennifer Michalski, Stacy (TJ) Shaffer, Andy (Angela) Nelkie, Carrie (Corey ) Johnson, Aimee Jensen, Michael Bailey, Adam (Melissa) Nelkie, and David Bailey; 15 great grandchildren, Brendan Nelkie, Kylia Nelkie, Julia Nelkie, Hunter Nelkie, Isiah Nelkie, Mason Michalski, Ryder Michalski, Jeremiah “Bud” Nelkie, Caylee Johnson, Ethan Nelkie, Max Nelkie, Cambree Johnson, Hollan Nelkie, Madilynn Shaffer and Amelia Nelkie; his beloved granddog, Mindy Lou. I worked with Bernie for many years at the Tawas Area Schools. He was the nicest, most friendly and dependable man I ever worked with. You, his descendents, have every right to be proud of this gentleman. There aren't very many like him!

As a former teacher of Tawas Area Schools, I can truly say Bernie just made your day when you caught him in the hallway, or classroom. He was quick to smile, and ready to help you. He seemed to just love his job, and the students and staff he encountered each day. So sorry to hear of his passing.
